The Growth of West Coast Swing in San Diego

A group of us who have been dancing West Coast swing for over 30 years were talking the other night at a West Coast swing dance party at Pattie Wells’ Dancetime Center in San Diego about how many more people seem to be dancing West Coast swing than in the past. It seemed to grow a lot during the surge in interest in Country Western dancing in the early to mid 1990′s but in recent years it seems like the interest has sky rocketed. A friend peeked in on an Introductory West Coast swing class and it was packed. In fact, the West Coast swing attracts more people for the beginning classes than jitterbug or Lindy hop. Just a few years back there were a lot more people looking for East Coast swing of all varieties. Now it seems the tide has turned for west coast swing San Diego. More and more dancers seem to be learning West Coast swing these days.
